Organizational Development – Arnold Style

hr blog: organizational development - arnold styleorganizational development I was in a client meeting recently talking about organizational development with their product development and business development managers, when it struck me—there sure is a whole lot of “development” going on!

Question: how can organizations make sure their deployment activities are integrated so they end up lean, fit, and muscular —kind of like “The Governator” in his heyday? After all, as a body builder, Arnold paid a lot of attention to getting his muscular proportions “right” for competition. Organization builders do the same in order to compete in competitive markets.

But take a look at some recent Arnold pictures and you will see that his proportions have gotten a little out of whack. The same thing can happen to organizations if they are not careful (metaphorically speaking of course). Do you recognize any of the following issues facing your organization?:

  1. Too much business development, not enough product development? Problem: satisfying customer’s long term needs due to antiquated products.
  2. Too much product development, not enough business development? Problem: Reduced organizational sustainability due to low sales or profitability.
  3. Too little organization development? Problem: Reduced organizational sustainability due to lack of people talent, low productivity, inadequate systems or processes, or the inability to change.

So here is the tip for today: get your organization’s proportions in shape and, like Arnold in his heyday, you can say with confidence: “I’ll be back”.
