4 Tips for Managing a Mid-Life Career Change
September 18, 2009 0 Comments
From personal experience I have found that there are only two types of people who change careers in mid life: those who want to and those who have to. And it seems that the “have to” group is in the majority these days.
With this in mind, here are four-tips for people who “have to” change their career:
- Expect to fall into a pit – but don’t let it be a pit fall! Forced change involves restructuring your outlook on life. This can be a struggle. Understand that change is a process that you need to work through. It is not an overnight event.
- Maintain your self esteem – no matter what has happened – you are worthy, deserve respect, and are entitled to another chance at career happiness.
- Take the opportunity to think deeply about what you want out of life – as Joseph Campbell said “follow your bliss” (visit the Joseph Campbell Foundation web site at http://www.jcf.org)
- Strengthen relationships. In times of change look to your loved ones and friends for strength – control your emotions and welcome and appreciate their support

I love the simplicity of your tips, and the timeliness. I’m a whole health coach and with layoffs and cutbacks what they are right now, I’m encountering people all the time who are struggling to reinvent themselves.
If you think it would be helpful, I also offer a resource – an eBook – to support people dealing with the emotional aspects of our current economic climate. It’s available for free at http://www.LemonadeNetwork.com.
Keep up the great work!
