The Role of the HR Professional in the Talent Planning Process
July 1, 2009 0 Comments
Most senior managers pay close attention to marketing, financial, and legal issues when writing their business plans. But how about the HR issues? It is frequently left to HR professionals to figure out what needs to be done to attract, recruit, train, develop, and retain the talent needed to deliver the goals. This is the “Talent Planning Process” (also called Human Resources Planning).
So what are the key elements of this process? There are four:
- Determining the impact of the organization’s objectives on specific organizational units.
- Defining the skills, expertise, and total number of employees required to achieve the organizational and departmental objectives.
- Determining the additional human resources requirements in light of the current human resources bench strength.
- Developing and implementing action plans to meet the anticipated human resources needs.
What are the skills needed by the HR professional to do this well? The ability to translate organizational goals into HR action plans is the key. This requires imagination, strategic thinking, and business acumen – all skills in short supply in HR as well as other business disciplines.
