Tip #62: 4 Tips for Managing Diversity
April 29, 2009 0 Comments
Diversity in the workplace is important for a number of reasons, not least of which is the organization’s need for new, innovative, diverse ideas. Organizations with employees from diverse national cultures and ethnic backgrounds are more likely to contribute to better informed decision making – particularly in the increasingly interconnected global marketplace. So how should managers build diversity within the organization? Here are some tips:
- Provide strong leadership that embraces diversity in all its forms and communicates the importance and necessity of diversity within the organization.
- Create and communicate a diversity mission statement and implement a proactive diversity plan that actively strives to make the organization more diverse; don’t sit back and assume it will happen all by itself.
- Educate employees and managers on the importance and benefits of diversity.
- Follow through. Diversity is not something you can check in on once every 5 years. Set diversity goals and check in often to make sure they are being met.
