Tip #59: The “right” Type of Strategic Management
April 28, 2009 0 Comments
Strategy is the name of the game when it comes to business success. Without a clear and well communicated strategy people in organizations run around like chickens with their heads cut off . When employees do not know which route your company is taking toward a bright and, hopefully, profitable future is sometimes called “mushroom management” (i.e. keep’em in the dark and feed them on manure”). With this in mind, here are three approaches to creating and implementing successful organizational strategies:
- Understand your “Hedgehog Strategy” (read Good to Great by Jim Collins) – focus on what you are good at and be better than everyone else!
- Take a vertical Integration strategy: For example it doesn’t make sense for a huge company like Google to pay another organization to help them develop slick new ways to reach new web advisers. It makes more sense for them to just buy out the firm, integrate their technology, and continue to mange the smaller firm as a subsidiary. We’ve seen this from Google all too often in the conquest to rule the world (Double Click, You Tube, Feed Burner, the list goes on).
- Status quo – This sort of strategy is great for companies who have a solid product or set of services and are happy with the steadiness of their growth rate. Remember, business does not always have to be about growing by high percentage rates each year. With growth come new organizational challenges that not all organizations wish to face. Remember, you don’t have to be Apple to be considered successful!
